We applied for a grant from the local Parish Council (Yapham cum Meltonby), to provide a new lawn mower for the association, to replace the associations aging and broken lawn mowers that were cast off, and originally donated to us.

We were successful in obtaining the grant money, and this has helped us purchase a new Honda Izy HRG 416 SK Lawnmower, which is self propelled, which will help members cut the grass.

My Thanks to the Councillors at Yapham cum Meltonby Parish Council.

The following article was prepared for the Parish Magazine and will probably be the first of many media reports, so keep checking back as things will start to move quickly now.

“We are delighted to announce that a grant of almost £24,000 has been secured  from the Big Lottery Fund’s Local Food scheme and we can now begin to action the plans for community allotments in the village.

Over the next few weeks work will begin to level the field, install fencing, pathways and parking areas and mark out plots. The ambitious amongst us hope to have at least some produce planted this season ! Setting out the site is the first and main part of our plans, though by subsequently providing help and training along with social activities, the hope is to create a worthwhile and lasting facility for the benefit of the whole community.

There will be 20 plots ( one of which is allocated for schools/group use ) with residents of Yapham cum Meltonby being given priority.

Several plots have been reserved already though there is still some availability, so if you are interested in the project or would like a plot, have a look at the website and get in touch using the ‘contact us‘ facility there:

https://gravelpitallotments.org.uk/

It has been a long and sometimes fraught journey to date but we are extremely grateful to the Local Food scheme for the funding and support and also the Parish Council for allowing us to rent the land. However, my greatest thanks must go to the members of Gravel Pit Allotments Association for all their hard work and tenacity in getting this far !

Table Top Sale Today

It was the table top sale this morning  from 10.00am – 1.00pm. Members of the Allotment association and partners that had been roped into helping out on the day, gathered early at one of the Allotment Association members house at 9.00am to fill our cars with electrical items, cloths, plants, cakes, books, children’s toys and bric-a-brac and drove off in convoy to the Scout Hut in Pocklington, where we setup our stalls.

Here are some photographs of setting up the Table Top Sale, and a few pictures with punters present.

A photographer from Pocklington Post, came to photograph the event and members of the association.

I think I can safely say, “a fun time was had by all!” I look forward to the next fund raising event!

I don’t have the final amount raised, but as soon as I know, I’ll post it here.

The lottery fund bid submitted in August has now been passed to the second stage so is progressing in the right direction. We will get some help from an adviser about completing the second stage application and should hear more about this in the next couple of weeks.

We have already received a grant of £250 from East Riding of Yorkshire Council to be used for the provision of deep raised beds and compost bays for our disabled access/schools plot.

Our bank account is up and running and includes a small amount raised from members who utilised the discount seed scheme.

I’d like take this opportunity on behalf of the Gravel Pit Allotment Association to wish all our readers a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year.
