We’ve returned tonight to the Parish Council Meeting, we had hoped that their would have been a vote on handing over Gravel Pit Field to the Allotment Association.

The Chairman of Yapham cum Meltonby Parish Council, John Ackerley stated “Its highly likely that Gravel Pit Field will be handed to the Allotment Association once we reach agreement”.

The Allotment Association will send it’s documents to it’s legal people, and Yapham cum Meltonby Parish Council will do the same.

The Allotment Association will then have to accept or decline Yapham cum Meltonby Parish Council Agreement.

Table Top Sale Today

It was the table top sale this morning  from 10.00am – 1.00pm. Members of the Allotment association and partners that had been roped into helping out on the day, gathered early at one of the Allotment Association members house at 9.00am to fill our cars with electrical items, cloths, plants, cakes, books, children’s toys and bric-a-brac and drove off in convoy to the Scout Hut in Pocklington, where we setup our stalls.

Here are some photographs of setting up the Table Top Sale, and a few pictures with punters present.

A photographer from Pocklington Post, came to photograph the event and members of the association.

I think I can safely say, “a fun time was had by all!” I look forward to the next fund raising event!

I don’t have the final amount raised, but as soon as I know, I’ll post it here.

Before ground works start on the 6 April 2010 (thinking positive!), I thought it was about time to publish some current photographs of how Gravel Pit Field looks after the snow has melted, leaving a water logged pond!

The lottery fund bid submitted in August has now been passed to the second stage so is progressing in the right direction. We will get some help from an adviser about completing the second stage application and should hear more about this in the next couple of weeks.

We have already received a grant of £250 from East Riding of Yorkshire Council to be used for the provision of deep raised beds and compost bays for our disabled access/schools plot.

Our bank account is up and running and includes a small amount raised from members who utilised the discount seed scheme.

I’d like take this opportunity on behalf of the Gravel Pit Allotment Association to wish all our readers a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year.

(a copy of the Allotment Update which will be posted on the village notice-boards in the parish of Yapham cum Meltonby and forthcoming newsletter)

Brief details of our progress so far:

·         Following the initial meeting of interested parishioners on 20 April 2009, Gravel Pit Allotments Association was formed and a Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer were elected.

·         A website has been created which will also detail our progress :

All visitors to the site welcome !

·         A formal request for the provision of allotments has been made to the Parish Council.

·         The proposed site for the allotments (land known as Gravel Pit Field) has been administered by the Parish Council for many years, but definitive ownership is currently being determined in order that a long term undertaking as allotments can be considered.

The current tender runs until April 2010.  We envisage clarification on ownership before then.

·         A survey of the site has been made and plans drawn up, showing space for 19 plots measuring 21m x 5m. Some of these may be available as half plots and there is also for provision for disabled access on a couple of plots.

The plans also give an indication of resources required, which will inform our intended funding bids.

·         Membership of the National Society of Allotment & Leisure Gardens Ltd (NSALG) has been applied for, giving access to various advice, insurance, discounts etc.

·         Preference for any available plots will be given to Yapham cum Meltonby parishioners, however any excess will be offered to people outside the parish.

If you wish to register your interest in a plot, request further details or offer assistance, please contact :

Or if you prefer, use the ‘contact us’ section on the website

 Kind Regards

The Committee and members of Gravel Pit Allotments Association
